What does it mean to ‘Run Wild’ in Missouri? Much like our popular 'Run Wild in Alaska' itinerary, it means trying it ALL- everything the area has to offer! It means getting amongst it. Getting dirty… Maybe even getting wet… Getting INTO it. Ultimately, it means seeing a beautiful place in a way most other visitors do not. On this trip, we'll ride along the mighty Missouri River and paddle our way along the majestic Mississippi- come and experience Missouri in a way you never expected!

Cycling: These days, is seems EVERYONE wants to ride the Katy Trail- a nationally-renowned rail-to-trail bike path that crosses the entire state of Missouri. For this trip, we’ve picked just the highlights and you pick the distance – ride 12 to 48 miles per day. With its hard-packed gravel surface and gentle profile, the Katy Trail is suitable for all riding levels. Ride three days town-to-town through beautiful central Missouri, alongside the Missouri River, with stops in wine country and the state capital. You can bring your own bike, or rent one through us (rental not included, see details below).

Oktoberfest: A highlight on the Katy Trail is Hermann, Missouri- a town known for its German heritage and influence. Throughout the month of October, the tiny town swells with German pride and parties each weekend with beer gardens, parades, music and more.

Paddling: St. Louis sits at the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers- with all that water, float trips are a must-do in Missouri. Our itinerary includes a half-day guided canoe trip on these great waterways.

The Gateway Arch: We’ll actually paddle right up to the famous St. Louis landmark, now a U.S. National Park, and spend some time exploring it’s renovated grounds and underground museum.

You can see it all from a tour bus. OR…you can Run Wild. Take advantage of this unique itinerary (and our local guides) and see Missouri in a new and unexpected way!

Day 1 – Tuesday, October 1

Your guides will greet you at the St. Louis airport (STL) and launch our journey across the state in a private F4A van to the quaint trailside town of Rocheport. Here we will be welcomed at locally-owned Bed & Breakfast before heading out to dinner at a local winery.

Day 2 – Wednesday, October 2

Our first day of riding traces the route from Rocheport to Jefferson City (48 miles overall, you choose your mileage). This is widely considered the most beautiful section of the trail with the Missouri River on one side of the trail and towering limestone bluffs on the other. We’ll stop for a picnic lunch at the riverside ‘resort’ known as Cooper’s Landing, and we will finish the day at the steps of the State Capital building. Our evening plans include a tour of a haunted prison and dinner at Prison Brews- a local brewery - before retiring to a modern local downtown hotel.

Day 3 – Thursday, October 3

Leaving the capital behind, we’ll be rolling through hamlets and homesteads built by 19th Century German settlers. Their history is well-preserved in the town of Hermann, which hosts annual Oktoberfest celebrations that draw thousands of visitors. It’s wise to avoid the weekends here during October, but we will still get a taste of the festivities (live music…lederhosen…beer and brats, too!) during our stay in the heart of Hermann at the Hermann Crown Suites.

Day 4 – Friday, October 4

With the rancor of Oktoberfest behind us, today we ride a quiet and pastoral section of trail between Hermann and Augusta. Here, we will load up the bikes and, before leaving the Katy, will visit a trailside brewery and a small-town general store for souvenirs.  Your F4A shuttle whisks you back to St. Louis, where we settle in for a two-night stay in historic St. Charles at the Country Inn & Suites, right on Main Street.

Day 5 -  Saturday, October 5

This will be a great morning to sleep in and enjoy a good country breakfast. After, take time to stroll the historic, brick-lined Main Street, St. Charles, with dozens of local shops and cafes. Other optional activities include a walk through the Lewis & Clark Boathouse and Museum, or another short ride along the Katy Trail. This afternoon we embark on our paddling adventure. We'll load up in voyager-class canoes for a trip down the great Mississippi River. We'll spend about two hours paddling, with a stop along the way for a delicious dinner prepared and served by our river guides- on an island in the middle of the Mississippi River! Our route will end at the Gateway Arch- the iconic historic landmark in downtown St. Louis- the take-out point is literally at it’s feet. We’ll enjoy the scenery and the grounds before heading back to St. Charles for the night.

Day 6 – Sunday, October 6

This is technically your departure day, but consider extending your visit! Staying an additional day (or two) would allow the option of running in the Mo’ Cowbell Marathon (Full/Half/10K/5K on 10/6), OR taking an optional St. Louis city tour with your local F4A guides that would include an inside look at the Arch and its state-of-the-art underground museum (and an optional tram ride to the top!). Choose your adventure! We’re happy to shuttle around STL until the day is over. Add an additional night in St. Charles when registering for this trip, or find your own accommodations downtown or near the airport if desired.

We do our best to plan a complete and satisfying adventure, but the itinerary above and the activities and schedules described within are subject to change for reasons beyond our control. As your adventure guides, we may have to make alternate plans as weather and/or trail conditions dictate.

We also understand that you have your own idea of the “perfect” trip – the right mix of being active, discovering new cultures and natural wonders, and having time to relax. Please let us know if at any time you want to “shift gears”.

Greer- Katy Trail

Joe and Brian were amazing guides. Brian kept us out of trouble on the trail while Joe made sure we were fed and comfortable. Our fellow travelers were a delight. The sights, food, music festival and beauty of the trail made this a never to forget adventure. Very doable for most fitness levels.

Dan - Katy Trail
Houston, TX

This was our 4th trip with F4A and as usual we had a casual, relaxing and fun adventure. The Katy trail is beautiful with picturesque farms, bluffs and small towns. The hotel accommodations were unique and comfortable. The restaurants were local and we explored regional favorites like fried pickles! The crew was helpful and resourceful. We are looking forward to trip #5 in the future.
