Norway boasts a gorgeous and rugged coastline where the scenery is dominated by massive fjords and more than 50,000 islands. Norway is a land of extremes, perched unassumingly on top the world. It’s a place where the glaciers are a recent memory, where every accountant and taxi driver has viking blood, and where the sun never stops smiling in summer.
Our eight-day multi-sport adventure tour begins in Bergen, gateway to the land of the fjords. Bergen is old, celebrating its first millennium in 1970, and brimming with Nordic charm and a casual atmosphere. Over the next eight days we will travel along the Sognefjord by boat, train, kayak, bicycle and on foot, ending with a spectacular day of cycling in and around Voss, an area known to adventurers around the world.
A $500 per person deposit is due at the time of booking. 50% of balance will be due May 1, 2019. Remaining balance will be due July 1, 2019.
Your deposit will become non-refundable after May 1, 2019. All other payments are non-refundable after July 1, 2019.
The cancellation policy above will be strictly adhered to. To avoid the loss of payments due to unforeseen circumstances, travel insurance is highly recommended. There is an option to book your travel insurance with your flight which is what we recommend doing.
You are responsible for arranging your own flights. Your destination will be Bergen, Norway. From the airport you’ll take a taxi to First Hotels Marin, your hotel for the night. There is also an option to fly into Oslo, and take the train to get to Bergen. We recommend researching both options and see what works better for you.
For the bike ride out of Balestrand, you'll ride a hybrid bike. For the ride from Finse, they are mountain bikes. Plan to bring your helmet (required), and your own pedals and shoes (optional). The bikes come with flat pedals so you can opt to ride with those.
DAY 1 (easy)
When you arrive in Bergen, you will need to make your way to the First Hotels Marin to get settled. If time permits, we'll take the tram up the mountain to take in spectacular views over the fjords and enjoy Bergen’s historic seaside setting. The welcome dinner tonight will be wonderful, as you’re dining at the famous Bryggen Tracteursted.
Lodging: First Hotels Marin
DAY 2 (easy) -- 28 miles of cycling
We leave Bergen by ferry, and spend the next two nights in Balestrand. After getting settled in your historical inn it is off for a wonderful afternoon of cycling along the shores of the Sognefjord. It is a busy day, but a beautiful one, and you’ll get your first glimpse at the fjord that inspired National Geographic Traveler to say "One of the World's Greatest Landscapes".
Lodging: Kvikne's Hotel (2 nights)
DAY 3 (easy to moderate) -- 4 to 5 hours of hiking
A local guide will take the group on an alpine hike above the hotel, so you’ll start the day with a view that will take your breath away — maybe literally! You can reward yourself for the day’s hard work over dinner, as our chef tonight has a sure hand with local fish caught in the fjord.
DAY 4 (easy) -- 2 to 3 hours of hiking
You’ll board the ferry to Flam around noon — arriving just in time to catch one of the world’s steepest trains to the top of the mountains, where we will be staying for the next two nights. Once settled in we will venture out for a wonderful hike in the mountains.
Lodging: Vatnahalsen Hotel (for 2 nights)
DAY 5 (moderate to challenging) -- 35 miles of cycling
Today, you will take the world’s most scenic (and steepest) train to Finse. After this incomparable journey, you will mount your trusty steed for a bicycle ride back to Flam, past waterfalls and gorges that will amaze and inspire. Our alpine lunch will be served at a quaint area hotel, where you can indulge in many local delicacies.
DAY 6 (moderate) -- 3 to 4 hours of sea kayaking
You will leave the Flam area by van to Naeroyfjord in the UNESCO world Heritagearea between the two major fjords of Norway, the Sognefjord to the north and the Hardangerfjord to the south. Our guided sea kayaking tour takes you through the most spectacular parts of the fjord, including the narrow, remote branches, accessible by boats and kayaks only.
Lodging: Fleischer Hotel (for 2 nights)
DAY 7 (easy) -- 15 miles of cycling (with longer options)
Today we have an easy bike ride planned around Lake Vangsvatnet. The route has us on quiet rural roads passing through Bordalsgjelet Gorge and several other idyllic areas. For those wishing more miles, no worries. There are other routes to choose from as well.
DAY 8 -- travel day
You return to Bergen today, although some of you might prefer to take the train to Oslo for your return flight. We look forward to meeting you, and sharing the joys of the road.
We'll plan the trip!
