Day 1 - Saturday, August 20
It’s the biggest day of the year in Reykjavík! A day when the annual Reykjavík Marathon races coincide with a huge downtown arts festival called Culture Night. It’s the perfect time to arrive and experience good old-fashioned Icelandic vitality, creativity, and hospitality. Whatever time you fly in today, we’ll make sure you get a taste of the action. Our hotel, right in the center of town, will be a perfect home base for all the festivities you want to take part in.
Lodging: A modern 4-star hotel located in the very heart of Reykjavík. Walking distance to the marathon and city center.
Day 2 – Sunday, August 21
Now, the adventure begins. After a quick trip around the Golden Circle and its popular attractions, we will embark on a more unique and private tour experience. We’ll take in the wonders of Iceland on our own schedule, in our own way. First stop, Hveragerði, where we meetup with a local friend for a private guided hike through a dynamic volcanic landscape, followed by an optional dip in a secret hotspring river, and delight in other surprises brought forth from the heated earth.
Lodging: Unique and contemporary mini-cottages at a local family farm.
Day 3 – Monday, August 22
The wonders never cease. On this third day of the trip, we have close encounters with spectacular waterfalls, immense glaciers, black sand beaches, and recently active volcanoes. We’ll start the day at Skógafoss, one of the largest waterfalls in the country, and also visit the National Park Vatnajökull. Bring your hiking boots and prepare to get wet and dirty. At each stop, we go deeper than other visitors.
Lodging: A chic new 4-star hotel located right between two of the most spectacular natural attractions in South Iceland.
Day 4 – Tuesday, August 23
You will think you’ve seen it all, but there’s more. Like an ethereal black lagoon where house-sized chunks of glacier bob and swirl as they float to sea. After a brief stop here, we will meet up with some local guides for a kayak and glacier tour. We will paddle into places that very few visitors get to see. Afterwards, we’ll have lunch at a local family farm before resuming our driving tour of the island. There will always be a chance to see plenty of wildlife as Iceland is home to many sheep, reindeer, puffins, whales, and of course the adorable Icelandic ponies.
Lodging: Beautiful family-operated spa/hotel, established in 1903 on the banks of Lake Lagarfljót at Egilsstaðir.
Day 5 – Wednesday, August 24
After a hearty breakfast, we’ll continue our drive towards the north side of the island. We will stop for a picnic lunch and also at an active geothermal site. We’ll spend the afternoon with bikes and a guide, learning more about how locals harness the power of the steaming underground. Bring your swimsuit and towel because this day includes a luxurious soak in the hot and healthful Myvatn Nature Baths. Our destination for the day is Akureyri, the second largest city in Iceland sitting just 60 km south of the Arctic Circle.
Lodging: Tasteful and comfortable guesthouse, with private bathrooms, and a perfect location in the center of town.
Day 6 – Thursday, August 25
On a full tour of Iceland you discover that each part of the country has its own landscape and distinct character. Today we head towards the western coast. When we get to the Snæfellsness Peninsula we’ll be greeted by a local family who, from their small family farm, lead rides along the coast and sandy beaches on Icelandic horses. A short drive from there will be Arnarstapi, a tiny hamlet filled with legend and lore, where we stay the night.
Lodging: Charming lodge located on a bluff overlooking the sea, with incredible sunset views.
Day 7 – Friday, August 26
Before we go home, there is one more side of Iceland to see: the inside! Explore a volcano the way few dare to do by entering the Vatnshellir Cave. It’s actually an 8,000-year-old lava tube with multiple caverns formed inside Snæfellsjökull, the volcano made famous by the Jules Verne story, Journey to the Centre of the Earth. From the outside, Snæfellsjökull, with its massive ice cap, dominates the western end of the peninsula. It’s often shrouded in fog or clouds, but we will hope for a good view of it before reluctantly driving away and heading back to the airport.
We'll plan the trip!
