Kris Corbett
Kris Corbett

Kris is an outdoor enthusiast, triathlete, event planner, and a true adventurist at heart! Right after college she headed to Colorado to follow her dreams of working at a ski resort, and continued to fall in love with anything and everything outdoors: hiking, biking, skiing, ice climbing—you name it she tried it! She also enjoys trail running and competing in triathlons, finishing 6 Ironman Triathlons, 2 Extreme Triathlons, and a Double Ironman so far! She absolutely loves the water and never misses a chance for a swim, including once completing a 10-mile swim race.

We feel lucky to have found this gorgeous 5-bedroom/5 bathroom mountain lodge in Twin Lakes, for our home during the trip.

Located at the base of Colorado's highest peak and backing to National Forest and a wildlife refuge-you couldn't ask for more privacy and serenity than you will find at this estate. The wrap-around deck offers amazing views of the sunrise and the setting sun. You'll have plenty of room in over 5,000 square feet, located on 22 acres. The Arkansas River only a short drive away. Mt. Elbert's trailhead only a short distance. Activities include fishing, hiking, kayaking, rafting and skiing or just admiring the beauty of the mountains!

You are responsible for booking your own flight into Denver (DEN). On August 16th, plan to arrive as close to 11am as possible. On the 22nd, book your flight to depart late afternoon around 3pm if possible.

A $350 (per person) deposit is due when you submit the reservation form.   The balance will be do 30 days prior to the trip. You’ll receive a reminder email when these are due.

If you cancel your trip before May 15th, your deposit is refundable, less a $100 cancellation fee. Once the final payment is made, it becomes non-refundable.

The cancellation policy above will be strictly adhered to. To avoid the loss of payments due to unforeseen circumstances, travel insurance is highly recommended. The easiest way is to purchase it at the same time you purchase your flight. Or you might consider purchasing insurance from World Nomads.

Day 1 – August 16th: Arrival at Twin Lakes!

There are a couple of options for arriving at the house in Twin Lakes.  You can fly into Denver International Airport (DEN) where you will meet up with a Fit 4 Adventure guide who will drive you to the house. Or, if you choose to drive, plan to arrive in Twin Lakes around 5:00pm.  This evening will be filled with happy hour, dinner and getting to know each other.

*Dinner is included in the price.

Day 2 – August 17th:  Leadville Hiking and Biking

We will wake up ready for adventure!  Breakfast will be served at the house, then we are off to Leadville! First up, a 5-6 mile hike on the Timberline Lake Trail.   Once arriving at the lake, we enjoy picnic-with-a-view, before heading back.

The day doesn’t stop there; next we will rent bikes in town to head up the Mineral Belt Trail. This trail is a paved bike path that is 12.5 miles long, and has beautiful views.  It does climb for the first 6 miles, but that means the 2nd half is a lot of fun. We will stop at High Mountain Pies for pizza and a beer before returning home for the evening.

*All meals are included in the price.

Day 3 – August 18th:  River Adventure and Sunset Horseback Ride

Today we trade the hiking shoes for river shoes.  The morning will be spent navigating the Arkansas River on a stand up paddleboard or an inflatable kayak.  The guides at Rocky Mountain Outdoor Center will equip us with the proper gear and give us plenty of instruction for a great time!  We will change into some warm clothes and grab lunch in Buena Vista.   Once again, the fun doesn’t stop there, as we travel a little further south to embark on a sunset horseback ride with breathtaking views.  One the way home, a stop in Salida for dinner will wrap up an epic day of adventure.

*Breakfast is included in the price.

Day 4 – August 19th:  Hut Trip!

Take time to chill this morning with a cup of hot java and a bit of breakfast at the house.  After getting your pack stocked with day hike and overnight essentials, we'll take a short trek to one of the 10th Mountain Division huts for the night.  You will be able to leave your luggage at the house and only hike with what you need for the one night.  It is a short drive to the trailhead, followed by a 3-mile hike up to the hut. It does climb most of the route, but we will be able to take our time and enjoy it.  The hut will be a rustic accommodation with bunkhouse style beds. We will be the only group at the hut. We will have a chance to relax and settle in, but then we will head up one more mile for a beautiful mountain top sunset.  Dinner will follow at the hut, and maybe a campfire.

*All meals are included in the price.

Day 5 – August 20th:  Return to Twin Lakes and Hot Springs

What goes up must come down … Breakfast will be served at the hut before we return back down the mountain to the trailhead.  We will stop in Leadville for a quick lunch before heading back to the house.  You'll have a little time to relax before dinner. A nice trip to the hot springs down in Buena Vista will top of the day.  A nice hot soak will be just what our muscles need before tomorrow's big day of hiking.

*Breakfast and Dinner included in the price.

Day 6 – August 21st:  Highest Point in Colorado

This will be our big hiking day!  After breakfast at the house, we will pack a lunch and head to Mt. Elbert.  The trailhead is a very short drive from the house. Mt. Elbert is the highest peak in Colorado standing at 14,439 feet high.  If you decide that you do not want to hike a 14er, then we have a second option as well.  The Colorado Trail crosses at the same trailhead and has a beautiful hike as well.  We will all return to the house for our final dinner of the trip.

*All meals included in the price.

Day 7 – August 22nd:  Depart for Home

Unfortunately all trips must come to an end.  Those that flew into Denver, we will shuttle you back to the airport to catch your flight home. Those who drove can hit the road when ready.

*Breakfast included in the price.
